Slater’s familiarity with EIU gives students a confident voice
CHARLESTON, IL (08/13/2026) Eastern Illinois University graduate student John Slater has been appointed to serve as the University’s student trustee, representing the voices and interests of EIU students on the Board of Trustees.
A native of Olney, Illinois, Slater is a 2023 graduate of Richland County High School and is pursuing a master’s degree in political science at Eastern. His career interests include public policy, and he said serving as student trustee provides an opportunity to advocate for issues that directly impact students.
“Ensuring Eastern Illinois University stays affordable for students is my number one priority while serving in this role,” Slater said. “Students can only learn if their minds are not focused on how they will pay their tuition. I want student voices to be heard at every level of decision making because students are the lifeblood of EIU, and they deserve to be represented.”
Slater said one of the qualities that drew him to Eastern — and continues to make the University stand out — is the close-knit campus community and the relationships students are able to build with faculty.
“What makes EIU so special to me is the connections the size of the University allows you to make,” Slater said. “The professors are not only exceptional teachers, but they also genuinely care about their students’ success. The small class sizes allow students to learn directly from experts in their fields, creating meaningful learning experiences.”
As student trustee, Slater will serve as the official student representative to the EIU Board of Trustees, providing input on University policies and initiatives while ensuring student perspectives are included in board discussions.
“John’s commitment to student advocacy and his passion for public service make him an outstanding choice to serve as student trustee,” said EIU President Jay Gatrell. “We look forward to the perspective he will bring as we continue advancing Eastern’s mission of providing an accessible, student-centered education.”
Slater’s term began July 1, 2026, and will conclude June 30, 2027.
