Nationally renowned scholar Dr. Joseph T. Hupp to lead EIU seminar on chemical warfare mitigation

(Charleston, IL) – Leaders in Eastern Illinois University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are excited to announce that nationally renowned science and chemistry scholar Dr. Joseph T. Hupp will deliver a public seminar on the mitigation of potential chemical warfare agents on Tuesday, August 27. The seminar will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Lumpkin Auditorium (Room 2030, Lumpkin Hall) on EIU’s Charleston campus. The event is open to City and County officials, first responders, and the general public. No reservation is required, and the seminar is free to attend.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Joseph T. Hupp visit EIU’s campus to present this chemistry-based seminar,” said Dr. Edward Treadwell, chair of EIU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “Dr. Hupp is one of the world’s leading experts in the areas of chemical science and chemical warfare mitigation. We encourage all available public officials, safety and health professionals, interested students and community members who can attend to benefit from his chemistry expertise and best-practice strategies for chemical mitigation.”

Dr. Joseph T. Hupp is currently a Morrison Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His research centers on energy- and defense-relevant materials chemistry. His accomplishments in his professional discipline have been recognized with awards from the Sloan Foundation, the Dreyfus Foundation, the American Chemical Society, the Electrochemical Society, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the Inter-American Photochemical Society, the Japan Society for Coordination Chemistry, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has served as a mentor for approximately 200 Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scholars, as well as about 40 undergraduate research students. He is recognized by Clarivate Analytics as among the world’s most highly cited chemists.

The seminar itself is thanks to EIU receiving the prestigious Jean Dreyfus Lectureship for Undergraduate Institutions award from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. One of the aims of the award is to bring a nationally renowned scientist to EIU’s campus to discuss chemical science and inspire more students to pursue careers in the field.
