Ceremony reinforces EIU, community commitment to being responsible citizens, leaders through selfless service

CHARLESTON, IL (04/22/2026) Eastern Illinois University and the Charleston Rotary club will host a formal dedication of a new campus Peace Pole on Friday, April 24 at 2 p.m.

“The dedication of the Peace Pole at Eastern Illinois University represents a powerful coupling of EIU’s mission to develop responsible citizens and future leaders in a diverse world with Rotary International’s core principle of Service Above Self,” said EIU President Jay Gatrell. “EIU and Rotary International have long been partners in advancing these fundamental beliefs, and we look forward to the dedication of the Peace Pole at EIU as a tangible reflection of those shared commitments.”

Located in the courtyard behind Old Main on EIU’s Charleston, Illinois-based campus, the monument features the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in several languages, reflecting the two organizations’ commitments to diversity and global unity.

Students and community members are invited to witness the dedication this Friday. Parking is available in the visitor’s parking lot on 7th Street across from Blair Ball.

EIU and Charleston Rotary’s visions are advantageously aligned-EIU’s focus on meaningful relationships drives the University to embrace a diverse, inclusive community, while the Charleston Rotary club envisions a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and ourselves.
